Let’s Talk About Men’s Mental Health
June is a reminder to check in on something we don’t talk about enough: how men are really doing—mentally and emotionally. At The Gentle Projects, we believe mental health is for everyone. And that includes the men in our lives.
Right now, many men are struggling in silence. Depression and suicide rates among men continue to rise. In fact, men are nearly 4 times more likely to die by suicide than women. Over 6 million men in the U.S. deal with depression each year—but almost half say they don’t talk about it, not even with the people closest to them.
Why?
Because opening up still feels like weakness to many. Fear of judgment, social pressure, and not recognizing the signs are just some of the reasons men hold it in.
- Here are some signs of depression in men to watch for:
- Feeling hopeless or talking negatively
- Pulling away from people
- Using alcohol or drugs to cope
- Acting without care or concern
- Trouble focusing or making decisions
- Talking about leaving a relationship
- Physical pain with no clear cause
- Changes in sleep or appetite
At The Gentle Projects, we’re here to make these conversations softer, safer, and more normal. Mental health isn’t weakness. It’s part of being human. And the more we speak up, the more we break the stigma.
Let’s remind the men we care about that it’s okay to ask for help—and that gentle doesn’t mean fragile.
